Does Age Really Matter In A Relationship?

By on 2/05/2013 05:53:00 PM

A seemingly ever-relevant talking point in the world of dating and relationships is the issue of an age gap between the two people concerned. It can be the source of confusion and doubt but the question that many will ask is how much of a bearing it should have on things when there is an undeniable attraction and connection between both parties. These are some of the reasons why it can be a concern for some people and also some tips if you happen to be in this kind of situation.

Reasons for doubts
The typical scenario that you may imagine when you think of age-gap relationships is for the man to be the older person but there are certainly plenty of examples to the contrary. For someone people, inside and outside of the relationship, it is not an issue at all but for others it can be the primary concern holding them back from developing things to their full potential. One of the biggest worries for people in this situation is what their friends and family will think of them being with someone who is significantly younger than they are. It can also be a concern for the younger person in the relationship too of course.

Thoughts of the future are something that form a big part of the majority of relationships and the older person may be the one who thinks about it more than their partner. It can be a worry imagining how old you will be at some point further down the line and how much younger your partner will be at this point but if you accept it then it is perfectly possible for it not to have a strong influence.

Are the foundations there?
It is very easy to make such a point but no relationship should be established as if it is a business arrangement. Huge age gaps between someone with a vast fortune and a younger partner have often drawn immense amounts of disapproval. There is a school of thought that asks the question of who is anyone else to judge? However, your relationship is more likely to succeed if it is built on a mutual attraction, shared interests and communication. The early stages of such a relationship are generally filled with a lot of excitement but beyond this there is also a need for solidarity. If you feel like you are far apart from each other in much more than just date of birth then it is best to go your separate ways. If however you really feel that age is nothing but a number then do not let anyone else tell you otherwise.
